Wondering about what happens when you donate eggs? The process involves a number of carefully coordinated steps, guiding you from initial application through to completion, with timelines varying depending on individual circumstances.

Here’s what to expect with Eggspecting, a USA-based egg donation agency coordinating cycles for women based in South Africa.

How Long Does Egg Donation Take?

As a South Africa-based donor, your donation cycle involves both a local preparation phase and an international travel period.

The overall timeline varies for each donor, as matching depends on a number of factors, including intended parent preferences.

Once matched, the process is carefully coordinated, with the international treatment phase typically involving approximately 19 days abroad (including travel days).

All travel costs are covered on behalf of the intended parents. You don’t pay anything out of pocket at any stage.

Phase One: Screening and Matching

The screening phase confirms you are medically, physically, and emotionally prepared for the process. It typically takes six to ten weeks.

Medical and Genetic Screening

You will undergo a pelvic ultrasound to assess your ovarian reserve, along with blood tests to measure hormone levels, including Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH). Genetic and infectious disease, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening are also completed at this stage.

As part of the screening process, you will receive comprehensive genetic screening for conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis and Spinal Muscular Atrophy at no cost to you.

Legal Agreement and Matching

Once matched with intended parents, you will enter into a legal agreement confirming you have no parental rights or responsibilities toward any child conceived through your donation. The matching process is carefully coordinated to ensure alignment between you and the intended parents, including preferences around communication, expectations, timelines, and cycle type. All legal, medical and travel costs are covered by the intended parents.

Phase Two: Ovarian Stimulation

This phase is coordinated as part of your full international treatment cycle. With Eggspecting, donors travel for the entire cycle and begin hormone stimulation once they arrive in the destination country, under the guidance of their medical team from the outset.
This approach allows for consistent monitoring, supports optimal outcomes, and prioritises donor safety throughout the process. The treatment phase typically spans around 10 to 14 days, followed by a short recovery period before returning home.

Medications

You will be guided on how to administer your daily hormone injections and shown exactly what to do by your medical team. Most donors find this much easier than expected once they begin. Your coordinator remains in close contact throughout this phase, offering ongoing support and guidance whenever you need it.

Monitoring

You will attend regular clinic visits for blood tests and ultrasounds. These appointments allow the medical team to track follicle growth and monitor your response to the medication treatment.

The Trigger Injection

Once your follicles reach the right size, your medical team will schedule a trigger injection. Timing is specific and will be communicated clearly by your coordinator.

Phase Three: Egg Retrieval

Retrieval takes place at your accredited international fertility clinic during your 19-day travel period.

The Procedure

The retrieval is a short outpatient procedure lasting approximately 20 to 30 minutes. You will be under IV sedation so you will be asleep and comfortable throughout.

Using ultrasound guidance, the physician carefully collects the eggs. There are no cuts or stitches involved.

Immediately After Retrieval

You will rest at the clinic for a few hours while the sedation wears off. Your companion will be there to support you on the day and accompany you back to your accommodation. It’s recommended that you rest for the remainder of the day.

Phase 4: Recovery

The retrieval is minimally invasive, but your body needs time to recover as your ovaries return to their normal size. Most donors find the recovery period to be relatively short and manageable.

Your medical team will give you specific recovery instructions. Follow their guidance carefully.
